Our Mom’s Fight Against Colorectal Cancer

University of Colorado Cancer Center

Mom is heading to Colorado next week to receive treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora, Co.!  She will be seeing Dr. Madeleine Kane, a specialist in hepatic metastatic rectal cancer.  We originally had planned on Mom going to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston but due to time, availibility and logistics Mom and Jay have decided to go to Colorado.  The majority of our family is there which will provide Mom with a better support system which allows Jay to continue working a little bit as well.  Also, the University of Colorado Cancer Center is a brand new facility, is actively seeking new patients with top tier doctors.  It seemed to be the best match for us all the way around.  Our decision was cemented when MD Anderson finally called back they were pretty unhelpful and said they were not willing to see Mom until she was completely healed from surgery.  CUCC said they would see her right away, they had a wound care center on site and she could finish healing while we took care of the priliminary scans and doctor visits and she should be all healed up by the time it time for treatment to start.

Her first appointment with Dr. Kane is on June 29th.  Her nurse is Gary Jenkins.  He has been extremely helpful in transitioning Moms treatment and records to CUCC.  As well as answering all our questions on what types of treatments they typically use for cancer in the liver.  The four typical treatments are Radiofrequency ablation, chemotherapy embilization, liver resection, and radiation/chemotherapy microspheres directly into the liver.  All of the doctors that provide these services are located in the same building which is much more convenient compared to Mom’s doctors in Texas.  All of the her doctors were in different facilities spread throughout Kerrville, Tx.

I’ll let you know how the appointment with Dr. Kane goes on the 29th.  I hope Mom and Jay really like her.
